The term ‘parakeets’ is commonly used to refer to all small to medium-sized parrots, which are usually fast flyers and colourful, sociable flock birds. The sun parakeet is one of the most colourful members of its species and is striking with its bright yellow-orange plumage.

Male and female birds are visually indistinguishable. Young birds initially have predominantly green plumage, which changes colour over time. As they grow older, the colours become increasingly vivid and bright.

All species of parrot have a strong beak. They use it to hold, crack, cut open and nibble.
