Madagascar partridge

Margaroperdix madagarensis

The Madagascar partridge stands out for its colourful plumage and, due to its limited ability to fly, is often seen foraging on the ground in the Masoala Rainforest at Zoo Zurich.

Red List

Least Concern

The Madagascar partridge forages on the forest floor for seeds, berries and small insects. It usually lives in pairs or family groups.

The nest is a simple depression in the ground, sheltered by tufts of grass or herbs. The female lays between 14 and 20 eggs. The young are precocial.

The species is endemic to Madagascar and was introduced to the island of La Réunion. The animals are heavily hunted. As a result, their populations have declined.
