Dragon's blood tree

Harungana madagascariensis

The dried latex of this plant turns blood-red. This is where its German name, ‘Dragon's blood tree’, comes from.

The Dragon's blood tree, which can grow up to ten metres tall, is found in humid rainforests and dry forests. On cleared land, the Dragon's blood tree spreads rapidly and forms secondary forests that resemble monocultures.

The bark of the Dragon's blood tree contains active ingredients that aid digestion. They are also sold in Europe under the trade name ‘Harongan’.
