Common flat-tail gecko

Flat-tailed geckos are found only in the rainforests of Madagascar. Nine species are currently known. They are likely only able to survive in their native forests.

Flat-tailed geckos live in trees. There, they are perfectly camouflaged thanks to their flat body shape (a very flattened head and tail) and their ability to blend in perfectly with their surroundings.

Some flat-tailed geckos mimic the surfaces of tree trunks, including lichen and bird droppings. They cling to a suitable trunk with their heads facing downwards. The camouflage effect is enhanced by a narrow band of skin running along the body and limbs. This allows the animal’s contours to blend in with the tree bark.

Flat-tailed geckos are nocturnal hunters and prey on various species of insect. When faced with threats, they open their large mouths wide and flash their bright red tongue as a deterrent.

Among the Malagasy people, flat-tailed geckos are regarded as harbingers of bad luck and devils.
